If so, good news. Both iOS and Android devices will let you create your own, custom keyboard shortcuts for … well, just about anything.
Once you’ve tweaked the right settings, you can ask “you there?” in a text message by simply tapping, say, “yt”. You could also conjure your street address, your official title, or a phone number in just a few keystrokes.
Here’s how to do it…

Just type your new keyboard shortcut on your iPhone and the full phrase will appear just above the keypad.

On an iPhone (or iPad):

• Tap Settings, General, Keyboard, Text Replacement, then tap the “+” button in the top-right corner of the screen.
• In the blank next to “Phrase,” type in (for example) “You there?” Then, in the Shortcut section, tap in the letters “u” and “t.”
• Tap the “Save” button. All done!

Let’s give our new shortcut a try. Go to Messages, compose a new message, and tap “ut.” Your new “You there?” shortcut should appear in the strip of auto-correct suggestions along the top of the keypad. Press the space bar or a punctuation mark to accept.

You can add custom keyboard shortcuts to your Android device’s Personal Dictionary.

On an Android device:

• Tap Settings, Language & Input, “Personal dictionary,” then pick a language or choose the “For all languages” option. (Note: the exact settings may differ depending on the make and model of your Android phone.)
• Tap the “+” sign in the top-right corner of the screen, then enter the word or phrase (like “on my way”) you’d like to make a shortcut for.

Open Your Optical Disk Drive With A Keyboard Shortcut in windows

Optical disk drives are still an integral part of almost all Windows machines. Even though devices like the Surface tablet prove you don’t need the drive to have a perfectly usable system, they are no where near going extinct. The optical drive isn’t going to go the way of the floppy drive for another few years. If you ever compare an ordinary Windows machine from a major manufacturer like hp or Dell, to a MacBook, you will notice that among the many design variations, the drive on a MacBook doesn’t need to be opened or closed. The same can’t be said for optical drives on both laptops and desktop tower setups. You either have to open it from My Computer or you have to press the physical button on the drive itself. If you’re looking for a much easier way to do this, give Door Control a try. It’s a free Windows app that will open/eject the optical drive with just a keyboard shortcut. It also claims to be able to close the drive but that will depend on the actual hardware on your system.

Download and Install Door Control. It will add an eject icon to the system tray. Click it to open the optical drive.

To configure a keyboard shortcut to do the same, right-click the icon and click ‘Hotkey’ from the context menu. Press the key combination that you want to use to open your optic drive and it will appear in the Shortcut Key field.

Door Control claims it can also close the optical drive but it won’t do so unless the drive itself has this feature. Think back to a time when large stereo systems came with CD players. There was normally an eject/open button to open the drive but if you didn’t use the button and instead just pushed the tray in a bit, it would close. Or you could use a remote to close it. The same doesn’t hold true for the drives on most laptops but some drive that are likely part of a tower PC machine might still have this ability. If you have such a drive on your system, Door Control will be able to close the drive as well as open it.

32 New Keyboard Shortcuts in Windows 10

A new focus on the desktop brings new keyboard shortcuts for desktop users, so rejoice! Here are all the new keyboard shortcuts you need to know in Windows 10.
From window management with Snap and Task View to virtual desktops and the Command Prompt, there are lots of new goodies for keyboard users in Windows 10.

Window Snapping

Windows 10 offers improved support for Snap — known as “Aero Snap” on Windows 7. You can now snap windows vertically — one on top of each other, instead of side-by-side — or snap windows to a 2×2 grid.

• Windows Key + Left – Snap current window to the left side of the screen.
• Windows Key + Right – Snap current window the the right side of the screen.
• Windows Key + Up – Snap current window to the top of the screen.
• Windows Key + Down – Snap current window to the bottom of the screen.

Combine these shortcuts to snap into a corner — for example, Windows Key + Left and then Windows Key + Up would snap a window into the top-left quadrant of the screen. The first two keyboard shortcuts aren’t new, but the way they work with the 2×2 snapping feature is.
(You can also use the mouse — drag and drop a window to the left or right edges of your screen, or drag and drop them into one of the four corners to snap into quadrants.)

Task View / Window Management

The Task View is a new interface that combined an Exposé-like window switching and virtual desktops — an awful lot like Mission Control on Mac OS X. In addition to clicking the “Task View” button on the taskbar to open it, you can use these keyboard shortcuts:

• Windows Key + Tab – This opens the new Task View interface, and it stays open — you can release the keys. Only windows from your current virtual desktop will appear in the Task View list, and you can use the virtual desktop switcher at the bottom of the screen to switch between virtual desktops.
• Alt + Tab – This isn’t a new keyboard shortcut, and it works just like you’d expect it to. Pressing Alt+Tab lets you switch between your open Windows. Tap Tab again to flip between windows and release the keys to select a window. Alt+Tab now uses the new Task View-style larger thumbnails. Unlike Windows Key + Tab, Alt + Tab lets you switch between open windows on all virtual desktops.

Virtual Desktops

There are also some keyboard shortcuts for quickly managing virtual desktops.

• Windows Key + Ctrl + D – Create a new virtual desktop and switch to it
• Windows Key + Ctrl + F4 – Close the current virtual desktop.
• Windows Key + Ctrl + Left / Right – Switch to the virtual desktop on the left or right.

Sadly, there’s not yet a key combination that will move the current window between virtual desktops. How about Windows Key + Shift + Ctrl + Left / Right — please, Microsoft?

Copying and Pasting Text / Ctrl Key Shortcuts

• Ctrl + V or Shift + Insert – Pastes text at the cursor.
• Ctrl + C or Ctrl + Insert – Copies the selected text to the clipboard.
• Ctrl + A – Select all text in the current line if the line contains text. If it’s an empty line, select all text in the Command Prompt.

Selecting Text / Shift Key Shortcuts: Many of the standard Shift key shortcuts for text editing now finally work in the Command Prompt! These include:

• Shift + Left / Right / Up / Down – Moves the cursor left a character, right a character, up a line, or down a line, selecting the text along the way. Continue pressing arrow keys to select more text.
• Ctrl + Shift + Left / Right – Moves the cursor one word to the left or right, selecting that word along the way.
• Shift + Home / End – Moves the cursor to the beginning or end of the current line, selecting text along the way.
• Shift + Page Up / Page Down – Moves the cursor up or down a screen, selecting text.
• Ctrl + Shift + Home / End – Moves the cursor to the beginning or end of the “screen buffer,” selecting all text between the cursor and the beginning or end of the Command Prompt’s output.

More Shortcuts

• Ctrl + Up / Down – Moves one line up or down in the Command Prompt’s history — it’s like using the scroll bar.
• Ctrl + Page Up / Page Down – Moves one page up or down in the Command Prompt’s history — it’s like scrolling even farther.
• Ctrl + M – Enter “mark mode,” which helps for selecting text. Previously, the only way to do this was by right-clicking in the Command Prompt and selecting Mark. Thanks to the new Shift key shortcuts, this mode is no longer as important.
• Ctrl + F – Opens a Find dialog for searching the Command Prompt’s output.
• Alt + F4 – Closes the Command Prompt window.

1. Alternatively referred to as NWPM, which is short for Net Words Per Minute, NWAM is short for Net Words A Minute and is the Gross Words A Minute (GWAM) minus any errors.

For example, if you typed 400 words in five minutes; divide 400 into 5 to get 80 GWAM. If you had errors while typing it is the number of errors divided by the time you typed. If you made 10 errors your error rate is 2 errors a minute (10 / 5 = 2). To get the final value subtract 2 from 80 to get a 78 NWAM.

Keyboard is not connected properly

Verify that the keyboard is connected properly to the computer by turning off your computer and then disconnecting and reconnecting the keyboard to the computer.

Stuck key

Ensure that there are no stuck keys on the keyboard. If all keys appear to be ok and you have a standard Desktop computer with keyboard, turn the keyboard over and gently hit the back of the keyboard to loosen any dirt or hair that may be stuck in the keyboard.

Bad keyboard

Try another keyboard on the computer to verify that the keyboard has not gone bad.

Bad PS/2 or AT port

If all of the above solutions are not able to resolve your issue it is likely that the port (PS/2 or AT) on the back of the computer may be bad and the motherboard or I/O board may need to be replaced.

While most PC users are still trying to figure out how to handle Windows 8, Microsoft doesn't want to sit idle: on 29 July 2015, the company started rolling out its new Windows 10 operating system. Being globally launched in 190 countries, the OS boasts a number of new wonderful features, including virtual desktops, improved digital assistant Cortana and tablet mode, revamped core apps, and even more.
It's hardly a surprise that the enhancements Windows 10 comes with required Microsoft to expand its already-broad list of keyboard shortcuts. We've tested the main Windows 10 shortcuts that address the system's new functionality, mostly related to multitasking, and have rounded up the ones you will immediately feel more comfortable with. Want to know special hotkeys to facilitate your Windows 10 experience? Here's our list.

Window Snapping

Compared with the older Windows OS versions, Windows 10 presents brand new support for window snapping. You are now not bound with simple snapping to one half or one quarter of the screen. Instead, you can snap windows vertically, to a 2×2 grid, and even one on top of each other.
Thus, the Windows + Left Arrow or Windows + Right Arrow combinations will let you snap current windows to the left or right side of the screen respectively. Whereas, Windows + Up and Windows + Down arrows will snap them to the top or bottom half of the screen.
If you combine these shortcuts, for instance, hit the Windows + Right Arrow + Up keys, your current window will be snapped to the top right quarter of the screen. Thus, in this same state, applying the Windows + Left or Windows + Down combinations will snap the window to the left or bottom half respectively, allowing you to cycle through the different quadrants of the screen.

Virtual Desktop

Although Windows has long supported multiple desktops, Windows 10 is the first time to see the feature publicly available to users. Even if you got used to working in a single-monitor mode, the option to separate related tasks into their own workspace with multiple desktops wouldn't go amiss at all.
So, if you find yourself keen on multitasking, just apply the Windows + Ctrl + D combination to create a new virtual desktop as well as Windows + Ctrl + Left / Right Arrow Key to switch between multiple desktops without the need to go through the multi-task view. In case you need to close the current desktop without any additional hassle, just hit Windows + Ctrl + F4 which will automatically switch you to the next virtual workspace.
Windows + Tab will open the task view (all your desktops and open apps), while pressing Alt + Tab keys will let you switch between open windows on all virtual desktops.

Command Prompt

The Command Prompt window in new Windows 10 also gets some new shortcuts that, unfortunately, may not be enabled by default. So, to set the hotkeys you'll need to open a Command Prompt window (for instance, by running cmd.exe from the Windows Start Menu), right click on the title bar, and go to Properties. Then, inside the Options tab, untick 'Use legacy console' and make sure that the 'Enable new Ctrl key shortcuts' as well as the two text selection options are activated.
Shift + Left / Right Arrow highlights a character to the left/right of the cursor, extending the text selection.
Shift + Up / Down Arrow moves the cursor up/down a line, selecting the text along the way.
Ctrl + Shift + Left / Right Arrow selects one word to the left/right of the cursor.
Shift + Home / End moves the cursor to the beginning/end of the current line, selecting the text along the way.
Ctrl + V or Shift + Insert pastes the text from the Windows clipboard at the cursor.

Ctrl + A selects the text in the current line; in case the line is empty, the combination selects the entire buffer.
